Group Holds Underwater Music Festival Off Florida Keys to Promote Reef Protection

What to Know

Most beachgoers across the Florida Keys are known for their love of music – but one group of divers took that love under the water to promote reef protection.

The Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival took place at Looe Key Reef, located just south of Big Pine Key, as a way for conservation minded snorkelers and divers near the continental United States’ only living coral barrier reef.

“(It’s) about preserving the reef, about lessening our own impacts to it and being aware of just how important the reef is to the economy of the Florida Keys and to this country,” said Bill Becker, the festival’s director.

Divers and snorkelers enjoyed ocean-themed songs including the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Fins” and the theme from “The Little Mermaid” while some costumed characters strummed air guitar and pretended to play replica underwater musical instruments.
