Guards Wait for Inmate to Pass Diamond Earrings He Swallowed

He is charged with retail grand theft and tampering with evidence

Guards at a Florida jail are taking on an unusual duty. They're monitoring the bathroom habits of an inmate charged with stealing and swallowing diamond earrings.

Leesburg Police say Ryan Penman and his girlfriend tried on a pair of $700 earrings at a jewelry store Thursday. According to an arrest report, Penman tried to pay for the earrings with a credit card in a different name. When it was declined, he handed back the earrings, but the clerk said they had been replaced with fakes.

Both were taken to the hospital. An X-ray revealed the earrings were in Penman's stomach. The Daily Commercial reports Penman was taken to a jail cell without a toilet as guards wait for him to pass the evidence.

He is charged with retail grand theft and tampering with evidence.
