Police Kill Gunman in Liberty City Shootout

The incident is the second police-involved shooting in a week.

Miami-Dade police have killed a man they say twice opened fire on officers responding to a domestic dispute call in Liberty City.

Officers arriving to investigate a report of an armed domestic dispute on Saturday found the suspect fleeing the scene in a late-model Jaguar.

Gunfire erupted near NW Second Avenue and 62nd Street where the man abandoned the car, opening fire on police before escaping on foot.

"I couldn't belive it," said James Rico Smith, who was in his car and when crossfire shattered a back window. "I was right in the midst of it."

Though the suspect was able to get away, police established a perimeter and found the man less than two hours later.

They say he again began to shoot at them, drawing return fire he did not survive.

No officers were injured in the incident, which occured during the Miami-Dade Police Department's "Operation Take Back Our Streets." That effort was prompted by a string of shootings in Little Haiti and Model City, including the double shooting of a teen and toddler last week and an alarming number of shootings involving other young people.

Saturday's incident is the second police-involved shooting this week, and the third since July.

On Wednesday, police shot a 16-year-old in Overtown after he allegedly pointed a gun at an undercover officer in a robbery sting, and on July 5, a rookie officer shot a man during a traffic stop.
