Hialeah Crash Leaves 1 Person Dead, Another 4 People Injured

The crash occurred at West 42nd Street and 1st Avenue.

Authorities said one person was killed and four others were taken to the hospital after a single-car crash in Hialeah.

A yellow Chevrolet was heading eastbound on West 42nd Street when the driver lost control and crashed at the intersection with 1st Avenue, witnesses said.

"He started swerving and he ended up crashing into a tree," Manuel Garcia said.

The impact was so great that the car, which contained five people, flipped over.

"It hit the tree, hit everything in its way, and then skid into the bush of the next house," Yoslandy Herrera said.

Herrera and other neighbors said they got together to help save the people trapped inside.

"We all ran and flipped the car over and there was still one guy inside squirming around," Herrera said.

Four people who were injured were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, police said.

A group of friends stood together in front of the hospital's Ryder Trauma Center Wednesday night to hear news about the survivors of the crash.

"We are in shock. We still can't believe it happened. It is so sad," Marelys Hernandez said.

A family member identified one of the survivors as 16-year-old Grisel Verdecia. She said the girl is speaking, but not about the crash.

"She hasn't said anything about the accident," said Ladys Cardenas, the victim's sister-in-law and best friend. "She started crying because she was telling me the girl was dead."
