Hialeah Gardens Cop Stole $2M in Laptops: FBI

Veteran officer helped a gang of thieves steal a shipment of laptops, the FBI claims

A Hialeah Gardens police officer was arrested Tuesday by the FBI for allegedly hijacking a shipment of laptops worth nearly $2 million.

Officer Jorge Raul Romero, 42, faces several federal charges including, committing cargo theft and obstruction of justice, after he helped eight other suspects steal 5,250 Toshiba laptops that had arrived to Miami from Georgia, a federal indictment read Tuesday.

Romero is a 13-year veteran of the Hialeah Gardens Police Department. Officials at the department declined to comment on the arrest.

Also arested were Jose S. Garcia, Jose Ramon Garcia, Ulises Torres Creagh, Ramon Concepcion, Erving Enrique Ortega, and Edwin Antonio Ortega.

Two other suspects, Alexeis Jimenez-Gonzalez and Edilberto R. Fernandez, remain at large, authorities said.

According to FBI agents, Romero and the band of thieves stole the laptops in July 2010 and stored them at a warehouse in Hialeah Gardens.

They planned to resell the laptops, valued at $1.9 million, the indictment said.
