Hit and Run Crash Numbers Rise in Florida Over Last Four Years

Results of a statewide study shows the number of hit-and-run car crashes in Florida rose by over 50 percent over five years of reports.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, says that just over 99,000 hit and run crashes were reported in the state during 2016 – up from around 72,000 in 2012.

Of that number last year, just under 38,700 of those crashes were in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Of those cases, 46 people died and 362 people were injured.

The subject was thrust back into the spotlight on Monday, when a man was stuck and killed while crossing State Road 7 in Davie. Police are still searching for the driver involved in that crash.
