Man Arrested After Teen Girl Punched at Hollywood Basketball Game

The incident happened September 18 at the Washington Park gymnasium on Pembroke Road during a game between two travel basketball teams.

A man was arrested after a teenage girl was punched at a basketball game in Hollywood last week in an incident that was caught on cellphone video.

Bennett J. Wyche, 43, was arrested on a battery charge, the Hollywood Police Department said Wednesday.

The incident happened September 18 at the Washington Park gymnasium on Pembroke Road during a game between two travel basketball teams. An adult, possibly a player's family member, got into the middle of the fight between the teams on the court and struck a player in the opposing team, Hollywood police said.

"I was getting jumped, and when I got loose, I hit one of the girls that was jumping me," the 17-year-old girl who was punched told NBC 6. "I didn't even see the guy; he grabbed me by my hair and cocked his arm all the way back and he punched me."

Wyche was a security specialist with Broward County Public Schools, the district confirmed Tuesday, but he was reassigned to a position away from students after the incident.

He is being held at BSO's main jail on $1,000 bond. Attorney information was not available.
