Homeowner Says Lightning Strike Responsible for Massive Tree Falling On Family Cars

What to Know

  • A homeowner in Fort Lauderdale is counting his blessings after a reported lightning strike brought down a massive tree in his yard.

Outside of a Fort Lauderdale home, a tree that lived through hurricanes like Andrew, Wilma, Katrina was no match for an overnight storm.

Hector Berrios told NBC 6 that lightning struck his massive pine tree, which came tumbling down onto his car and left it a total loss.

“My heart dropped, my heart dropped to my foot,” Berrios said. “I’ve never seen something like this in my life…never ever.”

His once soaring high pine tree, over 70 feet tall, now lays to rest on his beloved convertible BMW

“Katrina, Andrew never touched it never and this had to do it. It’s just a boom and it’s down”

Berrios believes around 1:30 am Tuesday morning, lightning struck his tree and that’s what caused the top part of the pine tree to come flying down, also damaging his daughter’s car bumper

Berrios says the tree had been in his yard for more than 30 years, but without a doubt he says he’s counting his blessings

“I’m still alive, my family is good, and everything is good.”
