Hurricane Relief Efforts for the Bahamas Continue in South Florida

People in South Florida were continuing to gather relief items Thursday for those devastated by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.

At Dolphin Mall, the City of Miami and Sweetwater police departments joined with the Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies to accept donated items like diapers, water and non-perishable food Thursday. The event runs until 10 p.m. Thursday.

South Florida radio personality Paul Castronovo from iHeartRadio was also at the mall as donations continued to pour in.

"I was going to the Bahamas since I was a kid, I was a fisherman, I'm a diver. I've had more memories and great times, the least we can do is give back," Castronovo said.

The donation drive is just one of several that are being held in South Florida to help Dorian's victims. For days, the hurricane had pounded the Bahamas with winds up to 185 mph and torrential rains, swamping neighborhoods in brown floodwaters and destroying or severely damaging, by one estimate, nearly half the homes in Abaco and Grand Bahama, which have 70,000 residents. Officials have confirmed 20 deaths in the Bahamas, and more are expected.

The Shops at Pembroke Gardens in Pembroke Pines will be accepting donations on Friday, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
