Ian Moffett, Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief, Tells Miami Gardens Students If They See a Gun, Tell an Adult

Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Ian Moffett had a clear message for students at Norwood Elementary in Miami Gardens Monday.

“If you see a gun, stop, don't touch it, tell an adult,” Moffett said, during a visit as part of gun safety awareness week.

He spoke to the young kids in their library. Numerous police officers accompanied the chief to the school.

The students also took an oath about gun safety Monday.

Already this school year, two girls living in Miami Gardens have been hit by stray bullets. One of them was 12-year-old Tequila Forshee, who died.

“The children are victims,” school board member Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway said, adding that they are “innocent victims of some of the problems that exist.”

Educators said teaching kids when they are young is essential. That way, when they reach middle school and high school, gun safety is already engrained and becomes common sense.

The superintendent even shared that same message online.

“No one explains to them what really can happen and what accidents can happen even when it's not the intention,” fourth-grade teacher Jennifer Garcia said.
