Agencies Conduct DUI Checkpoints, Urge Caution on the Water

If you're throwing or attending an end of the summer party over Labor Day weekend, law enforcement agencies want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Headlights brightened up the night along University Drive in Plantation on Friday where police were on the lookout for drunk drivers during a checkpoint.

Officers checked for proper licensing, drugs and even people wanted on warrants, but the focus was to educate people and prevent DUI.

"Not every person that drives down this street tonight will come through the checkpoint, but I guarantee that everyone who sees this checkpoint will think twice before they drink and drive again," said Heather Geronemus with MADD.

From Plantation to the beach, police also want you to keep a close eye on your stuff while you have fun in the sun.

"Your belongings, secure them. We have lockers out on the beach. Put them under towels, that way a crook doesn't come by and see those belongings," said Ernesto Rodriguez with Miami Beach Police.

If you will be on a boat, make a float plan. The Coast Guard said that means write down where you're going and when you plan to be back and give it to someone who can alert authorities if you don't return.

"If we don't know you're going out, we don't know you're missing, we're not going to come looking for you. That float plan is a pivotal piece of information that may save your life if you don't make it back," Lt. Mike Cortese with the USCG explained.

More than 400 cars had been through the Plantation checkpoint in a three-hour span, and there were four arrests.

There's a reason law enforcement does this over Labor Day weekend. On holiday weekends, the rates of drinking and driving increase. Two years ago on Labor Day weekend, 161 people were killed across the country, due to drunk drivers.
