Inmate Heading to Work Detail Dies in Crash

Lawrence Houze, 50, was riding with five other inmates when the van they were in flipped over.

An inmate going out on a work crew was killed when the van he was riding in flipped into a ditch.

The Florida Department of Corrections reports that 50-year-old Lawrence Houze was riding with five other inmates Friday morning when a car pulled in front of the van, causing the driver to lose control.

The driver and the other inmates were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released. Officials say everyone in the van had been wearing a seat belt.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that Houze was an inmate at the Okaloosa Work Camp. He was arrested in Escambia County for cocaine possession in January 2012 and was scheduled to be released in August 2014.

The crash remains under investigation.
