22-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot Outside Sunrise Nightclub

Police in Sunrise are investigating the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man outside of a nightclub early Sunday.

Officials said a man was shot at the Royal Plaza off Sunrise Boulevard outside of the Hibiscus nightclub at around 5 a.m. Sunday morning. He was shot after an after-hours party outside of the club.

The victim, who was identified as 22-year-old Akeano J. Lewis, was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Family members said Lewis moved to South Florida from Jamaica five years ago for a better life. He leaves behind a three-year-old son.

"It's just so scary and so sad, because we're black brothers and sisters, and whatever he did, he didn't deserve to die like a dog," said Komala, Lewis' cousin.

Police roped off the entire plaza for hours for the investigation.

“When I arrived this morning, there were a lot of cops here,” said Luis Gonzalez, who works in the plaza.

Workers at the Hibiscus Club would not comment on the incident to NBC 6.

Police said multiple shots were fired and Lewis died in the parking lot, but there were also no leads and very little information on the shooter.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
