Investigation Underway Into Brickell Construction Site Collapse

The investigation into the construction accident at a Brickell high-rise that ended with one person dead and several injured got underway Thursday.

The incident happened Wednesday at the Echo Brickell building, a 60-floor condominium under construction near Southeast 14th Lane and Brickell Avenue.

Crews were busy putting up a fence Thursday on Southeast 14th Lane as investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration began their investigation.

One compliance officer told NBC 6 that it's way too early to know what happened, whether wind or anything was a factor. Miami Police said it appeared scaffolding fell from the construction site, raining debris onto the streets below.

Five people, including two construction workers, were injured while one man died after he had a heart attack as he ran from the scene, officials said. Friends identified the man as Salvador Garcon, a banking executive originally from Spain.

Garcon's friend spoke to NBC 6 at a nearby church where he paused to pray Thursday.

"We understand that this is the area where he departed for eternity going back home, our spiritual home, and that's why we're here to say a symbolic goodbye," Ernie Torres said.

Meanwhile, Property Markets Group, the developer of Echo Brickell, released a statement Thursday saying the site is secure and was being reinspected to ensure proper safety measures are in place, and that they "send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of the gentleman who passed."
