Jeffrey Loria Sets $1.7 Billion Price Tag on Marlins: Report

Jeffrey Loria has reportedly floated a $1.7 billion price tag on the Marlins

The Miami Marlins are worth $1.7 billion in the opinion of team owner Jeffrey Loria, according to a report by Forbes.

Loria has not publicly confirmed the report, and in the past has denied an interest in selling the team. If the report is accurate, it would be a hefty number for a franchise with a myriad of issues. The Marlins play in an attractive location with a new ballpark, but have some organizational problems.

The Marlins are set to host the 2017 All-Star Game, which will bring in an influx of dollars to the team and the area. The Midsummer Classic is a coveted event for any city and Miami is sure to benefit from the week next July. The value of the team undoubtedly is higher due to the All-Star Game and the potential naming rights for the ballpark.

Presently the Marlins play at Marlins Park, which means the team is missing out on lucrative naming rights dollars. It is possible that a sponsor could sit atop the ballpark before the All-Star Game takes place. Millions of fans worldwide will watch the broadcast along with other festivities in the week.

Recently the Marlins missed out on several premium free agents, despite reportedly offering the most money in some cases. It is possible that the team's history with trades may have factored into the decisions by the players. Miami has signed big-name players before, only to move them along in trades shortly after.

The Marlins have had three owners in their history with Loria in place since 2002. Prior to Loria, John Henry and Wayne Huizenga also owned the ballclub. Miami has won two championships with one coming under Huizenga and the other with Loria.

In the past, the likes of Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney have been floated as potential parts of ownership groups. It is unknown if there are any other interested parties at this time.
