Jose Fernandez continued his impressive season when he helped his Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 on Tuesday.
The win for the Marlins halted a three-game skid and lifted Fernandez's record to 4-0 this season. The victory also improved the right-hander's career record at Marlins Park to 15-0. Washington currently holds an 11-game advantage over Miami in the National League East.
Fernandez went six innings and walked a season-high four hitters. The ace clearly did not have his best stuff, but was able to escape multiple jams. Fernandez's ability to work while not at the top of his game, helped him stay in the game long enough to get the win.
Manager Dan Jennings was able to go to his bullpen and bring on his top arms to preserve the lead. Bryan Morris, Carter Capps and A.J. Ramos worked the final three innings respectively. The trio did not allow a run, and Ramos earned his 17th save of the season. The closer loaded the bases but was able to escape the inning with a game ending double play.
Dee Gordon returned from the disabled list and picked up where he left off with a pair of hits including his fifth triple of the season. Gordon has a .341 average this season, and has done an admirable job of setting the table for Miami's lineup.
Martin Prado who has been the subject of trade rumors lately went 3-3 with a run scored. Miami may opt to hold onto the third baseman as he is signed to a team-friendly contract for the 2016 season.
Miami will try to make it two in a row over their division rivals on Wednesday when Tom Koehler gets the ball.
