Key West Passes Bill Aimed to Ban Plastic Straws in City

What to Know

  • By a unanimous decision, all seven members voted on the ban, which would take place starting in 2020.

Add the city of Key West to the growing list of locations banning the use of plastic straws after a vote by city commissioners.

By a unanimous decision, all seven members voted on the ban, which would take place starting in 2020 according to the Miami Herald. Commissioners must approve a second vote at a later meeting for it to officially be approved.

“It’s a big night for the environment,” said Ed Russo, a board member of the nonprofit environmental group Reef Relief, to the paper.

Commissioners approved an amended version of the original plan, which made it unlawful for anyone to use or possess a plastic straw, saying they didn’t want it to seem like a new criminal law. Exceptions were placed for those with disabilities or medical needs.
