Keys Wins Drinking Water Olympics

The Florida Keys goes on to compete for the state title, "Best Drinking Water"

The results are in and the Florida Keys officially has the best drinking water in South Florida.

A thirst-quenching competition was held Thursday night with professional taste testers taking blind samples of water from six cities in search of the best tasting H2O.

Judges lifted wine glasses filled with water from each city's utility departments, took a swig, and then held up cards with numbers signifying the score. It's kind of like the Water Olympics without the French judge. Actually, one of the judges was from Argentina.

There were no perfect scores, but the 9-8-8 score for Key West was enough to send the city on to the state competition April 10 for the coveted title of Best Tasting Drinking Water in Florida.

The win was an achievement of a lifetime for managers at the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority. No seriously, it is. They were just that happy.

"We feel like we have the best tasting water in the state and that's why people come to the Keys," Mike Tam, the Keys director responsible for producing the tasty tap. "It's pretty exciting. We've been here a couple of times and we never won. We are very proud."

North Miami finished in second place.
