Killer Bees Take Down Big Dog

Miami Gardens historic oak was packed with killer bees

George Williams and his German Shepherd were chased and stung Friday by thousands of Africanized killer bees.

Only Williams was able to survive the attack near his home in Miami Gardens.

"It was all I could do to get out of there. I had to strip naked in the front yard." said Williams. The bees were "aggressive as hell."

The bees stung him on his mouth, his nose, ears, all over his body. He probably should have gone to the hospital but said he was OK.

The death of the dog is a stark reminder that bees can kill. They were probably Africanized bees, said beekeeper Adrian Valero. Valero approached the massive hive that was packed into a oak tree but even he had to beat a hasty retreat as a number of bees surrounded him and got into his hair.

George and Debra Williams had wanted to cut down the bee infested tree, but Miami-Dade County officials deemed the old oak historic and placed a mythical "do not touch" sign on it.

"I got a husband all bit up in the face and his body and my dog is dead," wailed Debra Williams.

The bees are the culprits but George Williams might have triggered the attack.

The long time beekeeper, Adrian Valero, explained that the bees will get aggressive and attack due to "any noise, any animal, anything they think is a  threat.

Williams was trimming the oak tree with a motorized pruning saw, which generated plenty of noise, vibrations. His dog was with him near the tree.
