Ladies in White Protesters Detained in Havana

A popular dissident group in Cuba known as the “Ladies in White” saw several protesters and organizers arrested in Havana Wednesday as they marked International Human Rights Day.

The protesters gathered for the peaceful demonstration in a popular square in Havana. The group was chanting for peace and freedom. But as quickly as the demonstration got started, local police in Havana showed up to break up the protest.

Several of the protesters and organizers of the event were detained by police as anti-government rallies are rarely tolerated in the communist nation of Cuba.

According to the Cuban Commission for Human Rights, police detained 398 opposition activists in November alone and had more than 8,400 short-term detentions in 2014.
