Intense, But Short-Living Air Mass Brings Coldest Weather to South Florida Since Last Winter

Broward County declared a 1-day cold weather emergency beginning Tuesday night

What to Know

  • The real temperature drop will begin to be felt across South Florida with lows around 50 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

It’s time to dig out those sweaters and prepare to use the heater in your home as some of the coolest temperatures of the fall season will make their way toward South Florida in the coming days.

An intense, but short-living, air mass will bring the coldest weather to South Florida since last winter.

Officials in Broward County have already declared a cold weather emergency starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures were expected to dip into the 40s. Special shelters for the homeless will be open Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The shelters are at the Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale and at the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood, with a pickup location at Pompano Beach City Hall.

The heat from Monday, where temperatures reached near record highs across the area, will be a memory as the cold front arrives starting late Tuesday morning, keeping high temperatures in the upper 70s for much of the day while parts of North Florida are waking up to lows in the upper 30s as a result of the front’s arrival there.

Widespread temperatures in the 40s are expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, and overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.

On Wednesday morning, temperatures in the metro areas will reach the mid-to-upper 40s, in the lower 50s for Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and in the 60s in the Keys.

High temperatures are not expected to get above the high 60s on Wednesday and the low 70s on Thursday.

Friday, a warming trend will produce seasonable lows in the mid-60s and highs near 80 degrees before the heat makes its comeback over the weekend with above average high temperatures in the lower to mid-80s.
