Lauderdale Lakes Fire Leaves Family Homeless

Three adults and three children were left without a home Tuesday night after a fire tore through the home they had just rented.

“It was a devastating fire. It took over the whole house,” said tenant Veronica Woods.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the fire started in the kitchen of the Lauderdale Lakes home. BSO said the woman who owns the house had rented the home just two weeks ago and she had just started a new job a few days ago.

The mother’s boyfriend came home to find the house on fire and he broke out a window because he thought the woman’s three children, aged 9, 14, and 15-years-old, were inside. The girls weren’t at home at the time of the fire.

“Not even 10 minutes, I get a call,” said Woods. “My boyfriend says the house is on fire. He’s like, where are the girls? He thought the girls were home.”

However, the BSO said one of the three children had been cooking fries before leaving with their mother and that one of the kids left the stove on before all three left.

“Thank God my kids are out of the house, it was a devastating fire,” Woods said.

No one was injured in the fire, but the house is considered a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting the family with lodging and other needs.
