Rip current pull swimmers away from shore.

Here are some tips from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to keeping safe in a rip current:

•  Avoid swimming in beaches when rip current advisories are in effect.
• Swim at beaches with a lifeguard on duty and ask aboutsurf conditions before entering the water.
• Do not swim alone.
• If you do get caught in a rip current, be calm and swim out of the current in a perpendicular direction, following the shoreline. Swim to shore.
• If you cannot swim out of the current, float or lightly tread water to conserve your energy until you are out of the current, then swim to shore.
• If you see someone in trouble, get a lifeguard or call 911
