Crews Remove Metrobus Wedged Inside Little Haiti Building

After a slow and tricky process, crews removed a Metrobus that was stuck inside a building in Little Haiti after it crashed into the structure over the weekend.

The incident occurred Sunday morning at the intersection of NW 2nd Avenue and NW 54th Street when a driver of a white truck struck the Miami-Dade Metro bus, diverting it right into a clothing store.

Engineers were on standby and safety beams were put in place as workers made sure the Metrobus was removed safely.

“When the bus went in, it knocked down a corner column. That means that there is a big section of the second floor that is unsupported," said German Arenes, chief of Construction and Structural Inspection for Miami-Dade County Department of Transporation. "So if we were to bring the bus out without taking precautions, most likely the building section would come down.”

The building's structure has been deemed unsafe due to the damage caused by the impact of the crash, prompting city officials to issue a demolition order for the building.

“Right now the building official has declared the property an emergency," said city spokeswoman Stephanie Severino. "The property has been deemed unsafe.”

The building's owner has 72 hours to remove belongings and vacate the building before it gets demolished.

The owner of Omega Fashion Store at 5401 NW 2nd Avenue was concerned about his business and livelihood.

“That’s my heart, that’s my life. That’s me," said owner Arsene Omega. "I’ve been here for 41 plus years and I have this for 40 years. Every day I get up in the morning and that’s where I am. I don’t care if I’m sick, I’m always here. Nothing is gonna stop me to be in my place, you know.”
