Local Doctor Arrested After DEA Raid on Medical Office

A doctor and several of his employees were arrested after federal agents raided his Broward medical office Tuesday.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said a year-long investigation revealed Dr. Andres Mencia illegally prescribed more than a million doses of opioids in about two years.

Mencia, 60, advertised himself as a one-stop shop for you of your medical needs. But federal agents say it was a one-stop shop for illegal pain meds, and they shut the practice down.

"You’re putting peoples' lives in jeopardy to make money, which is not right," said Anne Judith Lambert, spokesperson for the DEA's Miami Field Division. "When you’re prescribing an opioid medication for no particular use, you’re endangering lives, without opioid medication that can be very harmful to people, and sometimes, deadly."

Agents were seen raiding the offices of AGI Medical and Dental on Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

The federal agents also towed Mencia's Bentley vehicle and raided his million-dollar home, which he apparently has spent a lot of money renovating.

Investigators accused Mencia of money laundering and are working to determine if he paid for anything with illicit funds.

Mencia has surrendered his medical license. The DEA also arrested three of his staff members who are now facing federal charges.
