Lockdown Lifted After Shooting Near Brownsville Middle School: Miami-Dade Police

Detectives said a man was shot in the arm in a drive-by shooting near a park at Northwest 24th Avenue and 46th Street

Miami-Dade Police said they responded to shots fired just after 3 p.m. Friday near Brownsville Middle School.

Detectives said a man was shot in the arm in a drive-by shooting near a park at Northwest 24th Avenue and 46th Street.

"Sitting in front of a house over here and all of a sudden gunfire erupted,” concerned parent Jessica Smith said. “It sounded like multiple guns and it was multiple shots."

The incident prompted the lockdown of the middle school, at 4899 Northwest 24th Ave., and Earlington Heights Elementary School, at 4750 Northwest 22nd Ave.

The lockdowns were lifted later in the afternoon.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Though the shooting did not occur in a school, it occurred just after Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho and Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Ian Moffett announced expanded safety measures to combat gun violence.

Detectives are still investigating the shooting and are asking for the public's help. They ask anyone with information about the incident to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
