Student in Custody After Lockdown at Westpine Middle School in Sunrise

A student who made a comment about a gun was taken into custody after Westpine Middle School in Sunrise was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Officers responded to the school on Northwest 50th Street after an unconfirmed report of a possible weapon on campus, Broward County Public School officials said.

Sunrise Police officials said the school was placed on code red after a student told someone to "hold this gun for me."

Another student alerted a staff member about the comment, and the school was placed on lockdown after the student who made the comment left the campus with two other students, police said.

Three other nearby schools - Piper High School, Banyan Elementary and Franklin Academy - were also placed on lockdown while police searched the area.

The student who made the comment was found in a nearby park in Lauderhill and taken into custody, and the lockdowns were lifted.

No gun was found, but the student was taken into custody for a mental evaluation and charges were expected, police said.

"The Sunrise Police Department wants our residents to know that any and all threats made to and inside of our schools will not be taken lightly and will be investigated to the fullest extent," police said in a statement. "The safety of our students and residents is of the utmost importance."
