Longtime Shelter Dog Herbert Finds a Home During Clear The Shelters

A dog who spent more than a year at Broward County Animal Care found his forever home Saturday during NBC 6 and Telemundo 51's Clear The Shelters event.

Herbert, an 8-year-old American Staffordshire, has been at the shelter since last August and had been there longer than any other current dog.

Shelter staff and volunteers began applauding and some were even crying when Herbert was brought out to join his new family.

"Herbert's a great dog, all the volunteers love him," said worker Lisa Alonso.

"It's just amazing, it's just a wonderful thing," said Nicole Sandler.

Dana Powmesamy said she was excited to welcome Herbert to her family.

"He's adorable, my son loved him right off the bat," Powmesamy said. "I think we're all just gonna love having him."

Powmesamy said she didn't go to the shelter looking for an older pet, but was more than pleased with her choice.

"I'm happy that he's going to be in a place where he can grow old," she said.
