Skateboarding Good Samaritan Stops Wynwood Hit-and-Run Driver

A driver was arrested after fleeing the scene in Miami where a person was struck by a car Sunday.

"I heard a big bang, so I walked outside thinking it was a car accident. The guy took off and there was a guy lying on the floor lifeless,” said Shawn Alarcon, a witness.

Alarcon said the hit and run crash happened outside his store, Wynwood Glass and Vape, near 26th Street and North Miami Ave. Police confirmed that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle.

“All of a sudden, I saw a car and a cloud of smoke and a loud bang over here on the sidewalk,” said Cory Boehne, a witness.

Boehne, who also witnessed the crash, said he jumped on his electric one-wheel skateboard to chase the driver about three blocks.

“He wasn’t complying,” said Boehne. “He had no intention of complying. He was acting very lost. So I used the board to strike the window. I broke the driver’s side window out of the vehicle, reached in, shut off the key and put the vehicle in park."

Alarcon also went after the vehicle and said he helped Boehne hold down the alleged hit and run driver until police arrived.

Miami Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to Ryder Trauma Center. The victim’s condition is currently unknown.

The driver behind the wheel, 24-year-old Jose Esteban Contreras, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury.
