50 People Involved in Airboat Crash at Gator Park: MDFR

50 people were involved in an airboat crash at Gator Park on Monday and nearly two dozen were transported to area hospitals.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, two airboats crashed at Gator Park located at 24050 Southwest 8th Street in Miami.

"Seconds before impact, you knew what was happening, so you just had to brace yourself and hold on," said Peter Brown, airboat passenger.

Two airboats filled with passengers collided after departing Gator Park. A tourist aboard one of the boats involved described it as an accident that could have been prevented.

"'We're going to crash' was the first thought because you knew it was coming. You could feel it coming. We were going too fast," said Jane Austin, airboat passenger.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said it was a side-by-side collision, potentially caused because of a miscommunication between the drivers.

Gator Park management released a statement saying: "Gator Park has had an excellent safety record for over 25 years, and regrets this unfortunate accident. We are currently cooperating with FWC to investigate the cause of this. Thankfully there were no serious injuries."

Officials believe no one sustained life-threatening injuries, but according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, 21 people were transported to area hospitals.

"One girl nearly fell and she came out from the other boat and landed on our boat," Austin explained.

One man from Scotland said he's still looking forward to the few days he has left of vacation in South Florida and called the tour quite the experience.

"It was scary. I didn't expect to come to the Gator Park and more frightening was the fact that if there had been any alligators there," he said.

Tourists told NBC 6 some people also lost personal belongings in the crash.

FWC is now investigating. Operations were running as normal at Gator Park on Monday.
