Armed Robbery Suspect Killed in Police-Involved Shooting in SW Miami-Dade

An armed robbery suspect was killed in a police-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade Tuesday morning, officials said.

Miami-Dade Police officials said the armed robbery occurred at a Wendy's restaurant at South Dixie Highway and Southwest 211th Street.

Surveillance video shows the gunman forcing an employee to a back room to open a safe. Once inside, the victim is seen pulling piles of cash out, and putting his hands up, appearing to ask for mercy.

But the gunman wanted more, forcing the victim to fish out more money he could stuff in his jacket.

The suspect then fled the restaurant and officers caught up to him in a residential area at Southwest 127th Avenue just south of Southwest 206th Street, where the shooting happened around 9:20 a.m.

"Heads up. He just pulled out a gun. He has a gun in his hand, units seek some cover," one officer said over his radio.

Police said two officers were involved with shooting the suspect, who was killed at the scene.

"There were two officers involved and we are trying to confirm who exactly shot their weapon and exactly how many shots were fired," Miami-Dade Police Det. Marjorie Eloy said. "A confrontation ensued and the officers were forced to shoot the subject."

Police later identified the suspect as 28-year-old Yohans Leon of Miami.

Aerial footage of the scene showed what appears to be a body covered by a yellow tarp with a black handgun lying nearby in the roadway. Police tape was seen blocking off a section of the road near a home.

Officials said the suspect was armed but they didn't say whether he fired his weapon. They said the officers pulled the trigger because they feared for their lives.

Neighbor Henry Rodriguez said he saw medics respond to the scene.

"They went with a stretcher down to the canal and then they came back with the stretcher empty and I figured out there was something serious and then one of the detectives came down with a yellow tarp," he said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

This is the third time in four days a Miami-Dade Police officer has shot and killed a suspect.
