Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting: Miami-Dade Police

Miami-Dade Police are investigating after a man was killed in a police-involved shooting late Tuesday evening in southwest Miami-Dade.

Police were called to a home in the 16000 block of Southwest 42nd Terrace around 9:40 p.m. after reports that 51-year-old Jorge Suarez Ruiz was trying to harm himself.

Ruiz' family told police the man was known to have a gun.

Police said Ruiz took off in a Toyota Camry but eventually came back to the house. Investigators said officers were forced to fire when Ruiz confronted them with a gun.

Vilma Obando lives in the neighborhood, "Hearing those gunshots out of nowhere really shocked us."

The two officers involved have not been identified. MDPD said one is a 14-year veteran of the force while the other is a six-year veteran.

Neither officer was injured. An investigation is ongoing.

"It's terrible it had to happen. I'm very sorry for everyone," said neighbor Carlos Perez.
