MIA Skytrain Closed Due to Derailment: Officials

The Skytrain at Miami International Airport Concourse D will be closed all day Tuesday as officials investigate an early morning incident in which one of the four cars derailed.

According to airport officials, crews were performing maintenance around 2 a.m. when one car out of the four trains went off the railing.

One of the cars went onto the roof of Concourse D and the other went off the rail.

An employee who was the only person on board at the time suffered minor injuries.

The cars were later safely removed from the track and taken to a hangar where they were being inspected by authorities.

Officials said the train would resume service once the tracks had been inspected and cleared for operation.

Travelers were forced to walk through the terminal, which is the longest one at MIA with 60 gates spread across about a mile servicing mainly American and American Eagle airlines.

"I told those people that I was coming in with, I said 'this is my workout for today,'" traveler Brenda Lee said.

Passenger Greg Ebelhar saw the derailed train while flying in from the Bahamas and arriving at the very last gate, No. 60.

"You could see it when we were taxiing in, you could see the two sitting up on the tracks, and then one sitting angled, you can't see the one on the roof," he said.

The incident is under investigation.
