Mad Tea Party in Broward

Mom organizes tax-day tea party protest

Broward mom Lauren O'Brien is hosting a tea party but there'll be no finger sandwiches or lace napkins.

The 24-year-old mother of two, inspired by a Fox News pundit, has organized the County's anti-tax protest aimed at corporation bailouts and homeowners who can't afford their mortgages.

"I just am very disheartened with the things that have been going on lately with the government," O'Brien told the Sun-Sentinel. "I shouldn't be having to pay for corporations. I shouldn't be having to pay for people who got themselves in a mortgage they couldn't handle."

The Broward rally is one of hundreds taking place across the country on April 15, tax day.

O'Brien, who claims she's never done anything political before, says the inspiration hit while watching Fox's Glenn Beck talk about the protests. When she found out that none were planned for Broward, O'Brien took action.

Whether she practices what she preaches is another issue. Her two children, aged three and nine months, both receive health care through government-funded Medicaid. She says her husband's meager earnings as an apprentice electrician don't cover the health insurance.

During a radio interview with WFTL this morning, O'Brien said she had applied for a county permit to actually dump tea during the rally, but her request was rejected. She encouraged supporters to hang a tea bag from the rearview mirror of their car.
