Magical Day at Disney for Young Miami Musicians

UM's MusicTime program shines on big stage

A group of 6 and 7-year-olds from Miami spent this past weekend in Disney. But they didn't go to see Mickey and Minnie or the other park entertainers, they were the entertainment.

"Disney was a little apprehensive because we are so young," said Dr. Joy Galliford, administrator for the University of Miami's MusicTime program. "It's fantastic, it's really big."

On Saturday, the children from MusicTime performed on their biggest stage yet, in downtown Disney.

"It was awesome," said Emily, one of the students.

A total of 15 talented students sang, danced and played keyboard during the 25-minute performance.

"At first I was very nervous," said Grace. "But then after, I was really happy and I wanted to do it again and again as if it was a really cool ride."

"Someone in the audience asked one of the children for their autograph," Galliford said. "Another one said we should go on 'America's Got Talent!'"

Their magical performance was also an emotional one for Ana Alexander. Her son, Colton, is autistic.

"I remember his first show when he was three. He just sat in his teacher's lap and cried and hugged her," Alexander said. "I thought he'd never be able to do anything on stage or in public again."

But thanks to the power of music and more specifically MusicTime, Colton was right up there with the rest of the kids, making the happiest place on Earth even happier.
