Malnourished, Wounded Dog Found in Box in Little Haiti

PETA offering up to $5,000 for information leading to arrest after dog had to be euthanized

A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information after a dog that was found malnourished and severely injured in a cardboard box in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood had to be euthanized.

The dog was discovered in the box at the intersection of Northeast 57th Street and Miami Place just before 1 p.m. on Nov. 30, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA officials said the dog was so badly malnourished and injured that he appeared to be dead. Veterinarians determined that he had been neglected for some time before he was apparently attacked.

"He was suffering from severe encephalitis and brain damage as well as multiple severe lacerations around his neck and chest, which were infected," PETA said in a statement.

The dog had to be euthanized because of the extent of his injuries. PETA said police are investigating but the group is offering the reward for information leading to an arrest.

"Someone left this dog wounded, infected, malnourished, and dying in a cardboard box on the side of the road," PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien said. "PETA is calling on anyone who recognizes this dog to come forward immediately so that whoever left him for dead can be held accountable and stopped from hurting anyone else."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Miami Police Department at 305-579-6111.
