Man Accused of Killing Wife Behind Bars in Miami-Dade

A Miami-Dade man accused of fatally shooting his wife in front of the couple's young children was waking up behind bars in South Florida Tuesday after he was extradited from Georgia.

Donald Strange, 59, flew back to Miami International Airport Monday evening to face a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his wife.

Strange was accompanied by police officers and was booked into the Miami-Dade Jail where he was being held without bond following a court appearance Tuesday morning.

Strange's attorney, Clinton Pitts, told reporters he would continue to seek bail for his client.

"I can assure you all that I will be representing him very vigorously," Pitts said after Tuesday's hearing.

Police said Strange allegedly fought with his wife, Hazel, before he pulled a gun out and shot her in the chest at their home in the 5300 block of Northwest 30th Place on Nov. 4.

Hazel Strange, 46, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where she later died.

The shooting happened in front of the couple’s 13 and 11-year-old children, police said. The 11-year-old child called 911 following the incident.

Authorities arrested Strange in southern Georgia after he went to visit his teen daughter at his ex-wife's home there, police said.

A dependency hearing was held for the children last week. They're staying with family members and have been ordered to undergo counseling.
