Man Arrested After Alleged Carjacking, Chase: Hialeah Police

A man was arrested after a carjacking in Hialeah Tuesday, police said.

Police said a man was resting in the backseat of a vehicle in the 900 block of East 28th Street, with the engine running.

Around 3:30 p.m., the man said someone jumped into the driver's seat and started to drive away. When the thief discovered the man inside the vehicle, police said the suspect punched him and told him to get out.

The victim said he got out and the thief drove off with the stolen Chevy Malibu.

Later on Tuesday evening, police said a Hialeah officer spotted the stolen Malibu and pursued the vehicle until the driver crashed and bailed out of the vehicle near Southeast 8th Avenue and Okee Road.

The suspect eluded police for several minutes by hiding under a bridge near the crash site.

The suspect was located and taken into custody without further incident. He was identified as 33-year-old Nicholas James Castelao.

No other details have been released.
