Man Arrested for Buying Copper With Fake Credit Card: Cops

Michael McGruder was arrested on Thursday

A man was arrested for using a fraudulent credit card to pay for thousands of dollars of copper wire, authorities said.

Michael McGruder, 27, was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of grand theft, dealing in stolen property and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

HD Supply Company alerted the sheriff's office to the case when they discovered that a fraudulent card was used to pay for $6,500 of copper wire delivered to a Fort Lauderdale address on Monday, said authorities.

Detectives posed as two delivery truck drivers after a second load of copper wire was ordered and was set to be delivered to the same address, authorities said.

Fort Lauderdale police and BSO set up surveillance near the location and arrested McGruder as soon as he accepted the reorder, authorities said.

The investigation continues and more arrests could be made.
