Man Arrested in Beer Bottle Murder in Miami

Police arrest suspect who hit man with beer bottle

Miami Police say they've arrested a suspect who killed a man with a beer bottle.

Michael Rodriguez, 25, is facing first-degree murder and battery charges in the death of Oscar Alvarado-Montoya.

Detectives say a group of men, including Alvarado-Montoya, were drinking beer in the area of the 900 block of Southwest 4th Street around 2:25 a.m. Sunday when they were approached by Rodriguez.

Rodriguez made several comments about borrowing Alvarado-Montoya's bicycle, and the group gave him a beer to make him go away, police said.

The group said Rodriguez suddenly became violent and punched several of them before he took his beer bottle and hit Alvarado-Montoya over the head with it.

Rodriguez took Alvarado-Montoya's bike and fled the scene, police said.

Rather than seek help, Alvarado-Montoya went to a friend's house, thinking he had a minor injury.

"The poor victim thinks there's nothing wrong, he's having head injuries, he goes to a friend's apartment to try to lay down, to hopefully sleep off his headache, sleep off his injuries, at which time he died as a result of his injuries," Miami Police spokeswoman Keandra Simmons said.

Rodriguez died the next day.

"From the information given to me, he died of a blunt trauma to the head," Simmons said.

Rodriguez was arrested Wednesday and is being held without bond. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.
