Man Arrested in Fatal Hialeah Stabbing

The victim would have turned 75 Sunday.

One man is dead and another is in custody following a stabbing in Hialeah Saturday, according to officials.

Hialeah Police said they arrested 54-year-old Evelio Valdes in the stabbing death of Carlos Cutino, who would have turned 75 Sunday.

The incident happened just before 6 p.m. in front of Cutino's home at 90 West 8th Street, police said. Neighbors said Valdes may have been hiding behind a stack of bricks when he jumped out and confronted Cutino. Police said he stabbed Cutino several times and fled.

Officers caught up with Valdes two blocks away from Cutino's home and arrested him. From the back of the police cruiser later on, Valdes could be heard yelling in Spanish, "Tell my mom not to wait up for me."

The exact motive for the stabbing is still unknown, but neighbors said there was a long-standing dispute between the two men.

Cutino's wife, Caridad Batueca, said they hadn't seen Valdes in months, following a nonsensical dispute where Valdes called Cutino a bad cook at a New Year's Eve party.

"It's incredible," Batueca said in Spanish.

Valdes was charged with second degree murder and is being held without bond.
