Man Arrested in Fort Lauderdale Hit-and-Run That Left Teen Dead

Passenger said driver panicked and drove home to tell his mom and pray before calling police

A man is facing charges after authorities say he hit two teens in Fort Lauderdale, killing one and critically injuring the other, before he fled the scene on New Year's Eve.

Michael Jumpp, 19, was arrested Sunday on charges including failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving death, failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing serious bodily injury, and operating a vehicle without a valid license, according to an arrest report.

The report said Jumpp, who doesn't have a valid Florida driver's license, was behind the wheel of his mother's car in the 4300 block of Northwest 19th Street when he struck the teens, who were on bicycles.

After the collision, Jumpp slowed the car but left without stopping the render aid, the report said. One 13-year-old victim, Zahgwe St. Dic, was taken to Broward General Medical Center where he later died. A 15-year-old, Cedric Tipton, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Jumpp went to his mother's home in Lauderhill where he called police, the report said. Officers responded and found the car, which had damage to the hood and had its windshield smashed inward, the report said.

A passenger who was in the car with Jumpp said Jumpp panicked and drove home to tell his mom and pray before calling police, the report said.

Jumpp appeared in bond court and was released from jail after posting more than $15,000 bond. His attorney said he's a senior at Academic Solutions Academy, a charter school in Fort Lauderdale.
