Man Avoids Jail in Fatal Hit-and-Run

Ryan LeVin sentenced to two years house arrest, 10 years probation

The man police say was the driver of a Porsche involved in the hit-and-run that killed two British tourists in front of their hotel in Fort Lauderdale Beach in 2009 avoided jail time after he pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of vehicular homicide.

Ryan Levin, 36, was sentenced to two years of house arrest and 10 years probation in Broward Circuit Court for leaving the scene of the February 2009 crash.

The sentence also provides that LeVin will never get behind the wheel again.

LeVin had no comment as he left court.

"I think that under these unique circumstances it was the right call," LeVin's attorney, David Bogenschutz, said of the sentence. "I think he's easily learned a lesson already...Ryan LeVin has come a long way since the first day I met him back in February of 2009, both mentally and emotionally and I think he's grown up a lot."

LeVin, from Illinois, was arrested last March after a lengthy investigation. Police claim Levin was driving his white Porsche 911 that ran down Craig Elford, 39, and 48-year-old Kenneth Watkinson during a drag race along outside the Courtyard Marriott on A1A.

Both men died at the scene. The Porsche was later found abandoned near the Interstate 595 and I-95 interchange with a battered hood, authorities said.

LeVin, who was already on probation for leading Illinois police on a high-speed chase in 2006 at the time, told police his friend Derek Cook was driving when the crash happened.

Cook, 38, was also arrested last March and charged with accessory after the fact and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

LeVin is the heir to Jewels by Park Lane jewelry empire founded by his father in the 1950s.
