Police have arrested a serial car burglary suspect who they say targeted vehicles in parking lots at the University of Miami for months.
Oscar Saavedra Cortes, 39, was arrested Thursday on multiple grand theft and burglary charges, according to an arrest report.
Cortes is responsible for four burglaries on the Coral Gables campus dating back to March, the report said.
According to the report, Cortes was seen on surveillance footage entering an unlocked car at the UM parking lot in the 5500 block of San Amaro Drive back on Dec. 4. He was able to get into the trunk, where he stole a backpack containing a $1,700 laptop and a $200 textbook, the report said.
A Coral Gables Police license plate reader was able to register the license plate on the car Cortes fled in, the report said.
Police say Cortes also stole a $1,300 laptop and wallet from a car in the same parking lot on Nov. 29. He also stole a wallet, cash, credit cards and sunglasses from a Mercedes in the parking lot at 1241 Dickinson Drive on March 16, the report said.
Cortes was booked into jail where he remained Friday under an immigration hold, records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
