Man Charged With DUI Manslaughter in Fatal 2014 Crash in Hialeah

A man is facing DUI and manslaughter charges in a fatal 2014 crash in Hialeah, authorities said.

Duniel Garcia, 38, is charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI causing serious bodily injury in the January 8, 2014 crash on Okeechobee Road.

Garcia was arrested Wednesday and was being held on $25,000 bond Thursday. He was appointed a public defender at a bond court hearing Thursday.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two vehicles were involved in the 3:30 a.m. crash. One of the vehicles lost control, rolled over the median and struck the other car.

According to an arrest report, Garcia was behind the wheel of a 1998 BMW when he collided with a 1994 Toyota Corolla.

The passenger in the Corolla, 38-year-old Ernesto Montalvo Arias, was killed in the crash. The driver, 61-year-old Lorenzo Valle Moreno, suffered serious bodily injuries and was hospitalized.

Garcia was also hospitalized with serious injuries, the report said.

According to the report, an FHP trooper went into an ambulance to speak with Garcia after the crash and smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.
