Man Charged in Bystander Shooting Has Mental Disability: Lawyer

Teen facing attempted murder charges may have had shooting pinned on him, attorney says

The man accused of firing an assault rifle that struck an innocent woman as she sat inside her Pompano Beach home has a mental disability and may have been fingered because of it, his lawyer said in court Thursday.

Albert "Fat Albert" Stanley appeared in a Broward County courtroom Thursday where he was ordered held on $50,000 bond for the attempted murder of Norma Mancilla.

Stanley, 19, is accused of firing the shot that hit Mancilla, 36, as she sat inside her home on the 2800 block of Northwest 4th Ct. on Tuesday evening. Police say Stanley was in the middle of an argument with a group of men in the street when he opened fire, with one of the shots entering Mancilla's front door and hitting her as she watched TV.

The mother of four was transported to North Broward Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. Witnesses identified Stanley as the gunman.

But Bill Gelin, Stanley's attorney, said the teen has a mental disability and that the people who identified him as the shooter may have been the actual perpetrators of the crime.

Nevertheless, Judge John Hurley ordered the high bond figure for Stanley. He's currently being held in the main jail in Fort Lauderdale.
