Man Facing DUI Manslaughter Charge in Fatal Crash in Pompano Beach

A driver who struck and killed a worker as he was unloading a vehicle from a car hauler in Pompano Beach in June has been arrested and charged in his death.

Joshua Lawrence Stein, 46, is facing charges including DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage and failure to use due care in the June 23 crash that killed 37-year-old Ivan Figueras-Pino, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office arrest report.

Stein was arrested Thursday but wasn't listed in jail records. It was unknown if he's hired an attorney.

According to the report, Figueras-Pino was unloading the vehicle in the 400 block of South Dixie Highway when he was struck by a Hyundai Accent driven by Stein.

Figueras-Pino was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died. Stein was also taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers at the scene found multiple bottles of medication and multiple canisters of compressed gas, or computer cleaner, in Stein's car, the report said.

An officer visited Stein at the hospital and Stein told him he's diabetic and had become dizzy and blacked out while he was driving, the report said. The officer noted that Stein's eyes were glassy and red and he was swaying as he sat near the end of his bed, the report said.

When the officer asked him about the gas canisters, Stein said "I use them to get high," the report said.

A blood sample taken from Stein showed he was "under the influence to the extent his normal faculties would have been impaired" at the time of the crash, the report said.

The report noted that Stein had a previous DUI conviction in 2004.
