Man Gets Life For Murder of Popular Ice Cream Man in South Florida

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shooting of a popular ice cream man in South Florida.

A Palm Beach County judge sentenced 21-year-old Frank Collins on Thursday. He was convicted in April of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Collins and an unidentified man approached 32-year-old Fresnel Atilus' ice cream truck in December 2008 and opened fire. Authorities say the shooters then jumped into a car driven by 21-year-old Michael Murdock Jr. and fled the scene.

Murdock received a life sentence for first-degree murder in May 2010. But an appeals court later threw out the conviction, and the charges were dropped.

Authorities believe the other shooter fled to the Bahamas.

The Palm Beach Post reports that Atilus left behind six children and a then-pregnant wife.
