Man in Wheelchair Killed in Hit and Run Crash Overnight in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in a wheelchair early Wednesday.

Officials confirmed the crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. near the 500 block of Sunrise Boulevard when a car going westbound struck the victim, who died at the scene.

The driver of the car didn't stop and fled westbound, officials said.

Investigators have not released the identity of the victim, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel identified him as a man nearby residents called “Popeye” – who was paralyzed from the waist down and was known to panhandle in the area.

Officials say they are looking for a black, older model Honda sedan with damage to the right front end and windshield.
