Babysitter Left Child in Car to Shoplift: Cops

Boy went inside store to see what was taking so long

A Broward man is in double trouble after he allegedly shoplifted in a store and left a young child unsupervised in a car to commit the crime.

Jeffrey DeSousa, 22, is charged with child neglect and petit theft for the weekend incident, which took place at a Deerfield Beach Marshalls, Broward Sheriff's Office said.

After DeSousa was caught with several designer shirts stuffed down his pants, the 7-year-old boy was found wandering the parking lot after spending at least an hour alone in a car, an arrest report stated.

The boy told detectives he was going inside the store to see what was taking De Sousa so long.

The boy's mom, who was not named in the report, said DeSousa was babysitting the boy while she was at work. It's unclear what DeSousa's relationship to the child is.

DeSousa tried to walk out of the store with five $35 Ralph Lauren shirts down his pants, the report stated.

The boy was found unharmed, the report said.

DeSousa is being held in Broward County jail on $15,000 bond. It was not clear if he had an attorney.
